The best Bamboo
I just thought I would drop you a line regarding my experience with SkeeTex Bamboo base layers. You have always been happy to help me any hopefully this might help you.
On the 23rd January I left Stourport on a three week trip to head for the most northern most point in Europe, this is approximately 300 miles inside the Arctic Circle. The plan was to drive via Denmark, through Sweden and continue north. We were camping on the way stopping each night on the edge of a different frozen lake or fjord.
The trip north took 11 days which helped us acclimatize to some extent finally reaching temperatures of minus 29 c.
Clothing was of paramount importance. It was pretty well a foregone conclusion that we would use what is considered to be the best base layer available in the form of merino wool. I had already side lined two sets some time well before the trip, but not having tried them on before I thought it best to ensure the post-Christmas paunch had not affected anything too badly!
Five minutes after putting on the merino top my skin began to crawl; it was to me, at least, like wearing hessian. “Oh well, that’s it” I said” I will just have to compromise and try the bamboo”. The use of the word “compromise” could not have been more wrong. I tried them on at home and through your mind might be saying “bamboo? Sounds harsh” your skin is telling you the opposite is true.
I took three sets on our trip and we were advised to start wearing them when the temperatures began to plummet at the Swedish/Norwegian border.
In a simple summary, the Skeetex Bamboo base layers are now my number 1 key piece of cold weather gear. I used a simple three layer system of bamboo, thin fleece mid layer and a windproof outer, that’s it.
The bamboo was not only warm but the anti-bacterial properties were also well proven, not putting too finer point on it, when you are wild camping at minus 20 c it is not easy to wash. Not forgetting we wore these for 24hrs per day the only reason I changed mine on day 10 was because of a problem I had with a chimney on a log stove meant that we smelt of smoke.
I can thoroughly recommend these bamboo base layers to anyone, very warm, very comfortable, and the icing on the cake – half the price of merino!
Regards
Dave
